Wilsonart Partners with Green Standards to Repurpose Headquarters Equipment for Central Texas Non-Profits and Reduce Waste, Fuel and Carbon Emissions

(January 2, 2014 – Temple, TX) Wilsonart, a leading manufacturer and distributor of decorative surfaces with operations in Temple, Texas, had not only outgrown its 30-year-old headquarters, but the company would soon have to relocate its offices with the expansion of Interstate Highway 35.  Wilsonart partnered with Green Standards to decommission its headquarters and donated office furniture and equipment to local non-profit groups, while diverting more than 25 tons of material from area landfills.

“Relocating more than 60 employees and moving out of a building with more than 30 years of history is no easy task,” said Jason Lambert, Relocation Project Coordinator at Wilsonart. “It’s in our corporate culture to think about our community and our impact on the environment, so we turned to Green Standards to help us make the right choices and ensure that as much as possible was upcycled for the good of our local community and the earth.”

Furniture & Equipment Benefit Local Non-Profits

The company channeled furniture and equipment valued at more than $5,700 to the local chapter of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and Families in Crisis Inc., which houses, supports and empowers people experiencing family violence, sexual violence and homelessness. The donations were disbursed primarily through the United Way of Central Texas, a long-time Wilsonart partner.

“The bookshelves, table and chairs are greatly appreciated by our members,” says Linda Morris, shelter coordinator at Families in Crisis. “Wilsonart’s support will go a long way to improve the lives of the families in our community.”

Upcycled Materials Support Wilsonart’s Sustainability Commitments

According to Green Standards, the more than 25 tons that were diverted from area landfills equates to a reduction of 72 tons of greenhouse gas emissions, 8,072 gallons of gasoline consumed, and a reduction of CO2 emissions from 11 homes annually.

Wilsonart’s commitment to sustainability is reflected throughout its manufacturing processes and corporate culture. Between 2010-2012, the company reduced raw material by 7.8 million pounds through processing investments, reduced 79,467 gallons of fuel through usage of super-efficient tractors and tires, reduced electricity usage throughout its enterprise by 2,121,231 kWh, recycled 4.5 million pounds of paper, packaging, metal, glass, etc., and reduced material sent to landfill by 12.1 million pounds through recycling and waste reduction.
